GEO Snapshot vs Ahrefs SEO Toolbar: On Page Checks vs AI Crawler Access

Diagram: five crawlers on the left, each on its own lane running toward a tall card on the right that stands for the site. A vertical gate sits between them, open at four lanes and closed at the middle one. Four crawlers reach the site and appear inside it as filled dots. The middle one is stopped dead at the gate in orange, and the slot it would have filled inside the site is left as an empty dotted ring.

Ahrefs SEO Toolbar and GEO Snapshot solve different problems, so the honest answer is most sites benefit from having both installed rather than choosing one.

What's free in Ahrefs SEO Toolbar, and what isn't

Ahrefs SEO Toolbar is free to install, and the free tier is not a stripped down trial. It covers a genuinely useful on page report, titles, meta descriptions, headers, canonical tags and indexation directives, plus link analysis that highlights links on the page, traces redirects, filters outgoing links, spots broken links and exports to CSV. It also switches your search region, language and device without needing a VPN.

What sits behind Ahrefs's paid subscription is the domain and page level data, Domain Rating, traffic estimates, referring domains, the metrics an SEO team quotes in a report. The toolbar itself doesn't require the subscription to be useful, it just narrows what you can see without one.

Domain Rating has nothing to say about AI crawlers

A diagram on a peach ground titled "Two directions, one of them counted", under an orange label reading "Domain Rating has nothing to say about AI crawlers". A page sits in the middle. On the left, four other sites are joined to it by solid curved lines that converge on its left edge, captioned "Counted by Domain Rating". On the right, three dotted orange curves leave its right edge and fan out to three hollow dotted circles, captioned "Never measured by any tier". A line across the foot reads "A strong backlink profile and a page no crawler can read are both true at once."

Domain Rating measures how strong a site's backlink profile is relative to others, a genuinely useful shorthand for traditional search authority. It says nothing about whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews can actually read a given page. Nothing in Ahrefs SEO Toolbar checks what an AI crawler receives versus what a browser renders, and nothing parses robots.txt by AI product to catch the case where a site allows one crawler and blocks another without realising it.

The checks GEO Snapshot runs that no Ahrefs tier includes

GEO Snapshot checks exactly that gap, whether the page is readable without JavaScript, whether robots.txt turns AI crawlers away, whether llms.txt and the sitemap exist and are accurate, alongside twenty three further checks across content, schema, links and speed. No account, no subscription tier, every check available to everyone who installs it.

Full cost breakdown: Ahrefs SEO Toolbar vs GEO Snapshot

GEO Snapshot costs nothing at any tier, all twenty eight checks, no account, no card. Ahrefs SEO Toolbar's own checks are free too, the on page report, link highlighting, redirect tracing, no login required. The metrics layered on top need a subscription, which as of 2026 starts at 29 dollars a month for the Starter plan, with the Lite plan most regular users land on running 129 dollars a month. Neither is required for the toolbar's core checks.

Agency, solo site, or in house: what to run

Which combination makes sense depends mostly on whether Ahrefs data already sits in your reporting.

Agency running audits across client sites. Run both. Ahrefs SEO Toolbar's on page and link checks, plus a subscription's Domain Rating data, cover the traditional audit. GEO Snapshot covers the AI crawler question clients are increasingly asking about directly, and the exported prompt hands straight to whoever is fixing the page.

Single site owner checking their own page. Start with GEO Snapshot. It answers the more urgent question, whether AI crawlers can read the page at all, and costs nothing regardless of how many pages you check. Add Ahrefs SEO Toolbar's free on page report for the SEO basics if useful.

In house team already paying for Ahrefs. Keep the subscription for link and keyword data, add GEO Snapshot alongside it. The two do not compete for the same checks, so there is no case for dropping either.

Head to head on GEO

An eleven row comparison of GEO Snapshot against Ahrefs SEO Toolbar, with the GEO Snapshot column picked out in an orange band. GEO Snapshot answers yes and Ahrefs no on AI crawler access and robots.txt per bot, served HTML against rendered DOM, and the llms.txt check. Both answer yes to on page title, meta and heading checks. Ahrefs answers yes and GEO Snapshot no on link highlighting and redirect tracing, and on region, language and device switching. On Domain Rating and backlink data, GEO Snapshot answers no and Ahrefs yes with a subscription required. On schema validation by type GEO Snapshot answers yes and Ahrefs partial. On the site wide sitemap scan GEO Snapshot answers yes and Ahrefs partial and paid. Neither requires an account for its core checks, though Ahrefs requires one for metrics. GEO Snapshot is free; Ahrefs is free at core with a subscription from 29 dollars a month. A footnote reads "Compared August 2026. Four rows go the other way, which is the point: these are different tools."

Questions worth asking before you install either

Does Ahrefs SEO Toolbar check AI crawler access? No. Its checks cover on page SEO elements, link analysis and, for subscribers, domain metrics. It does not check robots.txt against AI specific user agents or compare served against rendered HTML.

Do I need an Ahrefs subscription to use the toolbar? No, the on page report and link analysis are free. A subscription is only required to see Ahrefs metrics like Domain Rating and traffic estimates, starting at 29 dollars a month.

How much does Ahrefs SEO Toolbar cost? The extension itself is free. The Ahrefs subscription it can connect to runs from 29 dollars a month for Starter up to 129 dollars a month for Lite and higher for Standard, Advanced and Enterprise.

Does Ahrefs SEO Toolbar flag pages that block AI crawlers? No. Its indexation checks look at standard robots meta tags and canonical directives for search engines, not per bot robots.txt rules for AI crawlers.

Can I use both extensions together? Yes. They check different things and do not conflict.

Which is better for an agency auditing client sites? Both, run together. Ahrefs SEO Toolbar for the on page and link side of the audit, GEO Snapshot for the AI crawler side, which is increasingly part of what clients are asking about.

Is GEO Snapshot a replacement for Ahrefs? No. Ahrefs is a full SEO platform with a browser toolbar attached. GEO Snapshot is a single purpose AI search audit tool.
